In 2006 RIRBPS created the Instruments for Children Scholarship Program to bring music into the lives of school children.  Studies show that playing a musical instrument helps children to succeed in their academics.  Unfortunately for many children having a musical instrument to call their own is a financial hurdle that they cannot overcome.

The program started as a way to keep the African American legacy and tradition of R&B alive for the next generation of aspiring musicians.  Elizabeth Pegg, Program Coordinator (2006-2011) and Assistant Coordinator Donna Pena (2006-2011) sought out donations of new and slightly used musical instruments.

Once received all used instruments are evaluated, refurbished and/or repaired by Robert's Music of West Warwick.  Some instruments are donated by private donors, found at yard sales and acquired by anonymous donors.  Through the efforts of Elizabeth and Donna the Program partnered with the Rhode Island Philharmonic and the school departments of Warwick, West Warwick and the city of Providence in donating the instruments to under-privileged children.  Students use the instruments in student concerts and individual study.
